TEFL Program

TEFL is tutored On-Line, using a course package and text for home study. In addition, students will complete a practicum in one of our ESL classrooms. In some circumstances, participants may choose another location for their practicum.

  1. You must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree (or its equivalent) or be pursuing this at the time of registration.

  2. You will participate in an individual interview, either in person or on-line.
    After you have received our Letter of Acceptance, you will be asked to pay your tuition in full.

  3. Upon receipt of tuition, we will be given a course package and a password for your on-line tutoring.

 

 

 

 

 

Four Directions English Program Objectives

 
   
  • Effective communication with persons who wish to speak, comprehend, read, and write the English language.
  • Critical analysis of several teaching approaches that are recommended in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
  • Development of skills to use these approaches.
  • Improvement of your instructional skills.
  • Development of a resource package to assist your first teaching assignment.
  • Learning about all the issues associated with obtaining a job abroad as a teacher of English as a foreign language.


NOTE: Four Directions English Centre personnel will provide you with guidance and information for finding employment.

 
     

 

Four Directions English Program Requirements

 
   
  • You are required to compile a glossary of ten terms for each chapter.
  • You will then compose three questions for each chapter, as if you were to be the creator of the final exam.
  • You will compose a "resource manual" that you will use as a teaching aid in your work as a TEFL instructor. This, and #6 following, will be due two weeks prior to the final exam.
  • The resource manual must include one complete lesson plan.
  • Two additional lesson plans must be submitted to the classroom supervisor before teaching occurs.
  • You will complete a 16 hour practicum in an ESL classroom.
  • You will complete an open-book, essay-style and mastery exam (i.e. you will have the opportunity to write the exam any number of times until achieving a grade of 80%).
  • Your course COULD be completed within eight weeks of full time study.
